SENIOR APPLICATION ENGINEER

Location: Swindon (plus travel within UK and overseas as required)

We are looking for a talented individual to work as a Senior Application Engineer in the project engineering department, providing engineering and consultancy advice for the application of voltage control, tapchangers and control and protection equipment on power systems. The successful candidate will provide support for existing products and input into new product development, providing engineering support to sales and delivery teams in the factory and on-site.

 

Role Summary

  • Receive customer requests and identify the requirements
  • Design high level applications, outline and detailed designs for system integration, settings and parameter calculation and application
  • Cost estimation for related opportunities
  • Check and approve technical documents and engineering drawings
  • Test and commission control and protection panels and schemes in the factory and on-site
  • Coaching and mentoring junior employees
  • Working within company health and safety policies and procedures and supporting the Project Engineering Manager in delivering these across the department
  • Supporting the Project Engineering Manager to achieve deadlines and targets, and showing flexibility adapting to changing business priorities
  • Taking a proactive, overall solutions approach to work, supporting and flexing with other functions as required
  • Leading by example; demonstrating and promoting the company values

 

Requirements

  • Sound knowledge of general electrical engineering and electrical circuit theory with a strong mathematics ability
  • Sound knowledge of power systems and electrical substation arrangements and equipment including tapchangers, voltage control schemes and protection equipment and schemes
  • Good knowledge about distributed generation and their effects on the power system
  • Good understanding of wiring diagrams, core and cable schedules and general control panel arrangements
  • Experience in using load flow analysis software (e.g. IPSA power)
  • Experience in customer support, consultancy work and producing technical reports
  • Project and time management
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work as part of a small team, or on own initiative
  • Excellent communication skills

  • Proactive and organised with a ‘can do’ attitude
  • The following knowledge and experience would be advantageous but is not essential
  • AutoCAD Electrical experience
  • Software development knowledge (e.g. VBA, Python, C)

 

Qualifications

  • Degree in electrical engineering or equivalent
  • The following qualifications would be advantageous but are not essential:
    • Authorised to work in UK DNO substations
    • Current or previous safety related certification (CCNSG safety passport, BESC, etc.)
    • A higher degree in electrical engineering
